Earth Quake Effects Blue Jays Baseball Game

‘Recent earthquakes’ is one of the most searched topics on the web today. This is because the earthquakes have hit Southern California and San Diego today. The earthquakes with the magnitude of 5.7 to 5.9 have hit this North American region according to the US Geological Survey earthquake consultants.

It seems that earthquakes have targeted the US because of an up-surge in the frequency of jolts in this region of the world. There have been a series of earth quakes in Chile, Haiti which claimed a huge number of lives and it seems that tumults below the earth’s crust have not subsided yet. People become frightened and come out of their houses even a slight tremor is felt. [Read more...]

Magnitude 7.5 Hits India’s Nicobar Islands

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck near India’s Nicobar Islands, with the epicenter about 95 miles (150 kilometers) west of Mohean and 1,730 miles southeast of New Delhi, the U.S. Geological Survey said in an e-mailed statement.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami advisory, alerting India to be on the lookout for the dangerous waves that can be generated by a tremor, and later canceled the warning, citing sea level readings. [Read more...]

Tropical Storm Agatha Causes Sinkhole in Guatemala City

Guatemala Sinkhole

Tropical Storm Agatha swept across Central America yesterday, bringing torrential rain that killed more than 100 people and opened a 60m-deep sinkhole in Guatemala City which reportedly swallowed up a three-storey building.

The first named storm of the 2010 Pacific season dumped more than a metre of rain in parts of Guatemala, also hitting El Salvador and Honduras. At least 113 people were reported killed, with around 50 missing in Guatemala alone as rescue workers searched through the rubble. [Read more...]

Chile, Haiti, Taiwan and Japan: Earthquakes related?

Taiwan Seismology Department - By Stringer, AP

The Earth is angry.

Or at least it seems that way, with three significant earthquakes in the past week: A 7.0 magnitude quake near Japan last Friday, the huge 8.8 quake near Chile on Saturday, and a 6.4 near Taiwan earlier today. And, of course, there was the devastating 7.0 quake in January in Haiti that killed more than 200,000 people.

So, is there any connection among all the quakes? “No, not that we can see,” says Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo. “We’ve had quite a few quakes in the past two months, but not more than average.”

What has made the recent earthquakes newsworthy is that the earthquakes have hit near populated areas, says Caruso. Another 6.4 quake this morning rattled the tiny Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, but no injuries have been reported.

In an average year, the geological survey estimates that several million earthquakes occur around the world. However, many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes.

According to long-term records (which exist since about 1900), the U.S.G.S. expects that about 17 major earthquakes (magnitude 7.0 – 7.9) and one great earthquake (8.0 or above) will affect the world in any given year.

Caruso says the three recent Pacific quakes are all related to the so-called “ring of fire,” a seismically active region that surrounds the ocean.  However, the distances between the quakes are far too great for there to be any relationship between them.

Spiral Vortex Opening Over Norway

norway vortex spiral pictureThe mystery began when a blue light seemed to soar up from behind a mountain in the north of the country. It stopped mid-air, then began to move in circles. Within seconds a giant spiral had covered the entire sky. Then a green-blue beam of light shot out from its centre – lasting for ten to 12 minutes before disappearing completely. [Read more...]
